WHAT DOES A COUNSELOR DO?

  • Plans and teaches classroom guidance lessons in academic, personal-social, career, and citizenship
    • 1st & 2nd graders spend a significant amount of time working on problem solving ideas to manage conflicts (Kelso).
    • 3rd – 5th graders spend a significant amount of guidance time on bullying prevention (Recognizing, Refusing, Reporting with Steps to Respect).
  • Provides individual counseling in academic, career, personal-social development and community contribution.
  • Provides goal-oriented group counseling to target populations.
  • Develops appropriate interventions for students and monitors progress
  • Conferences with parents and teachers
  • Consults with teachers and other professionals
  • Serves as Student Services Team Coordinator
  • Case manager for 504 plans
  • ADHD rating scales and observations
  • Develop daily tracking cards for school and parents to monitor student behavior and goals.
  • Participates as a team member on Youth Services Team and IEP meetings, as needed.
  • Works with school personnel, parents, and students during crises
  • Helps coordinate special events such as can food drive, special assemblies, dental screening, ect.
  • Serves as a member of student threat assessment, sexual incident response committee, and suicide screening teams.
  • Coordinates Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance
  • Helps families with outside resources (medical, dental, vision, clothing, school supplies)
  • Refers families to community counseling or mental health professional resources
